Coastal Plants

Coastal Scrub and Chaparral, by Gr. 9
The California Coastal Sage and the Chaparral ecoregion is along the southern coast of California, and it has a lot of diverse animals and plants in its area. The coastal scrub area is an endangered habitat that is disappearing right before our eyes. A big portion of the area is being threatened by human development, in real estate.

Kelp are large seaweeds belonging to the brown algae (class Phaeophyceae) and are classified as the order Laminariales. There are about 300 different genera. Some species can be very long and form kelp forests.
The eight Channel Islands are also part of the ecoregion as are Isle Guadalupe and Isle cedros. The climate in chaparral country is Mediterranean, with cold wet winters, and dry, hot summers.
Ocean Plants use sunlgiht and minerals in the water to grow. Plankton is made up of plant-like organisms. Plankton are not able to move through the water on their own. These living things are too small to see without a microscope.
