Fire and Flood

Fires by Joy, gr. 9

Most fires are fought during the summer. Many Arrowhead firefighters don't see their families for more than 6 months and only get paid 10$/hour.

Crown fires form when fire from the ground progress to the tree tops and release gases and fire-whirls. Willows burn last because of the efficient water storage that their species of tree has. After forest fires the soil is much more fertile and new growth can be seen soon after each fire.

monkshoodAugust 20th 1910 Rockies became very dry and firestorms began and threatened many settlers. 3 million acres burned in the Rockies alone. 20 million in the west total.

Weather is a major factor in fighting fire, many have to take in account such things in order to even try and predict fire paths and growth.

Prescribed burning is the study of effects of fire on environments.

Flash Floods, by Allie, Gr. 9

Floods wash away soil and plants. A flash flood is when a rush of water usually coming from a lake / river/ near by oceans. Also can occur after heavy rainfall / hurricanes. Flash floods also occur when there is too much water on the ground to absorb the water. People are usually recommended to not cross a flash flood but to go the opposite direction.

Historical examples
1952 The Lynnmouth disaster .
1967 Flash flood in Lisbon, Portugal. 464 dead.
1971 Kuala Lumpur floods, Malaysia.
1976The Big Thomson river flood, which killed 143 people in Colorado.
1990 June 14, Shadyside Ohio flooding.
1990 The Quad cities Duck Creek Floods

Flash floods are extremely dangerous because of their sudden nature. Being in a vehicle provides little to no protection against being swept away; it may make people overconfident and less likely to avoid the flash flood. More than half of the fatalities attributed to flash floods are people swept away in vehicles when trying to cross flooded intersections. As little as two feet of water (60 cm) can be enough to carry away most SUV-sized vehicles
