Puppetry 11th grade
Milly is a woman of great experience in the art of theater and more specifically, puppetry. She first became involved in puppets by crafting them at home and putting on shows for her children. The play she performed for us was based on a story very close to her and her family. It was recreated from a story that inspired her daughter to learning how to read. It was also in celebration of the Chinese New Year.
She started off volunteering at The Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater in Balboa Park and eventually became employed by them. She had formal theater training in college, but she said with great joy, ÒI am constantly learning. One of her highlights of working at the puppet theater would have to be working together with people on large-scale productions, which generally take place during summer and holidays and require up to 10 people. For Milly, these productions are her passion.
Milly explained that it takes much practice and experience to be able to physically put on a show. This does not mean that puppetry is not only open to people with a degree in theater. There is a boy who is 13 years old and performs at the theater. He is as good as any of the adults, she said. Milly stated that as long as there is a passion and a love for something, you could achieve greatness. In addition to training people, they open the Marie Hitchcock Theater to the general public through the course of the year they open a crafting gathering and allow anyone to help make the puppets and various props used in the productions.
