    Aqua-Culture

    Open-ocean aquaculture is the farming of fish in large cages well offshore. The proposed open-ocean aquaculture project by Hubbs-SeaWorld is the first major project considered for federal waters. But there are a host of environmental, socioeconomic and liability concerns that must be addressed before our nation's oceans are opened to large-scale fish farming. Indeed, the respected Pew Oceans Commission, chaired by California 's Leon Panetta , and President Barack Obama 's pick to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Jane Lubchenco , have called for a coordinated federal framework with strict standards before open-ocean aquaculture proceeds. Vast amounts of small wild fish must be caught to feed the large ocean fish raised for human consumption, adding to the stress on our already-taxed oceans. Signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006, California 's Sustainable Oceans Act mandates strict standards to ensure that open-ocean fish farming doesn't harm our world-famous coast and ocean. Regardless of the merits or shortcomings of individual aquaculture projects, such a piecemeal approach cannot address the cumulative impacts of industrial-scale fish farming or broader concerns about responsible use of our ocean resources. From oil and gas drilling, to renewable ocean energy, to traditional fishing and now to open-ocean aquaculture, our nation's oceans are under increasing pressure. By Andrea G, Grade 8

    Water desalination is process that removes excess salt and other minerals from water . D istillation is the traditional process that is used. It is one of mankind's earliest forms of separating fresh water from a salt-water solution. When salt water is boiled, the dissolved salt remains behind as the fresh water vapor is boiled away. In a distillation process, water is first boiled and then the steam, or water vapor, is cooled. This cooling condenses the steam into water again. Distillation involves adding heat energy to salt water in order to vaporize the water and then removing the heat energy from the steam to make it into fresh water.

    The desalination industry has experienced a really high amount of interest. Due to many people being scared of the following issues; population growth in areas where water is considered to be short; the effects of climate change; and the development and improvement of new technologies that make desalination more cost effective, environmentally friendly and attractive than ever before.

    One place where a desalination plant will be located is Carlsbad . The desalination plant in Carlsbad will be able to supply water for 300,000 people. It will start with seawater it will put it through a series of filters to remove microscopic impurities. Then chemicals will be added for purification. After this is done it is put through a reverse osmosis, which is a system where filtration membranes remove more salt and impurities. 1 in every twp salons becomes high quality fresh water. The rest of the gallons are used to carry the salt that was removed during the process and it is returned to the ocean. This desalination facility will have the ability to make up to fifty million gallons per day. The facility would be working twenty-four hours a day seven days a week and there will be under supervision at all times.By Isamar, Gr. 12
