Puerto Rico

There is a house of Puerto Rico in San Diego. They celebrated the grand opening of a new museum in Balboa Park on Saturday, February, 4, 2006. The cottage they opened up in Balboa has many celebrations . By Susana, gr. 7 I read that The House of Puerto Rico was started in 1972 by a women named Doña Casilda. The objectives of La Casa de Puerto Rico are to promote a better understanding amongst people of all nationalities and races. The mission of La Casa de Puerto Rico is to promote an awareness of the social cultural, educational, economics and political contributions of the Puerto Rican community. La Casa de Puerto Rico has helped to build a strong Puerto Rican unity in our community and the reason why is because we are always educating ourselves about our history and culture. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean Sea, about 1,000 mi east-southeast of Miami, Florida. It consists of the island of Puerto Rico and islets of Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. Puerto Rico is mountainous with very little flat land. Puerto Rico has rain forest, deserts, beaches, caves, oceans and rivers.

El Yunque peak is in the Caribbean National Forest. These 28,000 acres are all that remain of the rain forest that once covered much of the island. More than one hundred billion gallons of rain fall here each year, creating a lush forest with plants of incredible proportions and variety. A moist hike or horseback ride take you past two hundred forty species of trees, some thousands of years old, fifty species of ferns, twenty varieties of wild orchids and riotous multitude of flowers. Living in the forest (all over the island in fact but quite far to spot) is the tiny coqui frog. The name is from his cricket like ko-kee chirp. This tiny creature (a quarter to one inch in size) is considered to be the national mascot. By Davena, gr. 9

Grandfather Deajai

He was born in SanTruce, Puerto Rico on March 21 st, 1954. His parents were Jocelyn and Henry Phillips. In Puerto Rico, he went in and out of the United States. His parents though there was too much racism in SanTruce at the time, so they did what they thought was best. Finally, he moved to the United States preferably Maine.

In Maine, he went to Farmington Middle school. He played on Farmington’s track team for the juniors. His parents moved constantly in the next 16 months. My grandfathers’ mother thought the family was too far from them.

So, his family moved to Texas, where my grandpa went to high school. He played on the track and wrestling teams. In Texas, he finally thought he was old enough to move on his own (after he graduated). So by himself, he moved to Los Angeles. He thought

L.A. was too dangerous and that the whole city was made to fun but it wasn’t. There was too much violence. He couldn’t handle the fact that every night you hear babies crying, sirens, screams, and people at the clubs partying. So, he moved to Vallejo, California.

In Vallejo he started his third job. Being a musician meant the world to him. So he learned how to DJ, and soon afterwards, he became a DJ. Then he had his first DJ“gig”. Soon after, he moved to Sacramento, California, with me and my family.

In Sacramento, he still worked as a DJ but an office worker also. He moved into my house and then he decided he wanted to become a DJ consultant also. Being an office worker didn’t stop him from doing what he loved. He didn’t stay with me for long. Later on, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.

In Las Vegas, he had the most business he ever had, at shows, casinos, and more. In his late 40’s and early 50’s, he was the best DJ around. He dedicated his blessings to his five kids: Chervocka, Audrey, Shay, Kymada, and Thomas.

My grandfather lives currently in San Diego. He takes care of his mother and step dad. He still is a DJ consultant. He enjoys old school music such as: the O’jays, Temptations, Barry White, Smokey Robinson, etc. He is also moving back to Las Vegas, to continue to DJ and be his own consultant. By: Davena
