In Guam they speak English and Chamorro. Favorite foods are pepper sauce. For recreation people enjoy diving, jet-skiing, skate parks, surfing. The holidays include Santa Marian Kamalen and Liberation day. Most people are Roman Catholic. Mustic includes Spanish, Filipino and Polynesian. People make hand weavings adn bracelets and necklaces.Guamaians may be Chamorros, Micronesians, American, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese or Korean.
Young Guamanians in Guam and the U.S have taken interest in building the sakman or the "flying proa". The sakman is a 40-foot sailing canoe. The sakman is an outrigger canoe that Chamorro natives used to build many centuries ago. Due to tragic events in Chamorro history, the art of building such a canoe and the associated art of way finding (navigating without instruments) have all but vanished. In the past few years there has been a re-awakening of these arts in Micronesia and Polynesia. Recently there has been a renewed interest in the Chamorro in Guam, Saipan, and here in the U.S to build the sakman once again.
