Introduction

John Muir School is a K-12 magnet school in the San Diego Unified School District serving eighty identified GATE students with individualized GATE plans under Model D.
Muir students took on studies using Paideia philosophy in 2008-2009. Paideia philosophy uses three instructional methods:
- Didactic Instruction (Short Lectures or Explanations)
- Intellectual Coaching (Projects)
- Paideia Seminars (Discussions)
GATE students practice of Paideia strategies in all classes throughout the school year. The goal at Muir is for GATE students to lead Paideia seminars and projects.
A Paideia project is a project that benefits the community in some kind of way. We learn new values, and skills, and also we meet standards and stay on track. Each project must have a proposal letter, a mentor and an audience. --Muir student
A Paidea seminar is a place where people can have a discussion without other people telling them that they are wrong. This is a really good activity for people to do more commonly. --Muir student
