A seed contains all parts needed to from a new plant. The stem of a new plant breaks through the soil. The leaf buds come out, and the seed coat drops off. As the stem grows upward, the first leaves develop. The seed splits and the lower part of the seedling forms the root.
How Plants Grow, by Gr. 3
Most plants begin growing when a seed sprouts. A seed sprout for beans opens into little peas. The seeds take in water which make it swell. Part of the seed turns into a root. This root holds the seedling in the ground.
Wildflowers, by Gr. 3
There are flowers all around the world. Many cactus plants have flowers. They bloom in the summer. Some wildflowers live in the rainforest, too.
Ocean Plants, by Gr. 3
Ocean plants use sunlight and minerals in the water. Plankton is made up fo plant-like organisms. Plankton is not able to move through the water by itself. These living things are too small to see without a microscope. There is also life on or near the sea.
Garden flowers, by Gr. 3
They were once wild flowers. Some kinds of flowers grow inside, too. Garden flowers can be grown all year.
Parts of plants, by Gr. 3
Most plants have four main parts. Most roots grow underground. Stems help support the leaves and flowers. Seeds are made in the flower. The roots hold the plant in place.
Why Trees are Important, by Gr. 3
People use trees in many ways. Wood comes from trees. People use wood to build houses, furniture, boats, and even art. Wood can be burnt as fuel, and wood makes paper. Trees give us nuts, coffee, maple syrup, and spices.
Grass, by Gr. 3
Grasses are the green that cover fields and pastures. They grown in swamps and deserts. They grow in very cold regions, and in hot lands. Grasses are even found in snowy mountains. Grass grows in a thick mat under the soil.
Dandelions, by Gr. 3
They grow from a seed. The seed turns into a flower. A dandelion has many leaves on it. Some dandelions have black stems. They need water to grow. Seeds come from other plants.
Kinds of Trees, by Gr. 3
Broadleaf trees have flowers and green leaves in spring. Palms form a large group of mainly tropical trees. Tree ferns are the only trees that have no flowers, fruits or seeds. Cycad trees live in warm, wet parts of the world. Ginkgoes have seeds but no fruit or cones.
