Be involved!
Parent involvement is always needed and appreciated at John Muir School. There are many ways in which parents can take an active role in their child's education here at Muir.
Volunteering is a very important and rewarding experience for both parents and children. Volunteer in classrooms or in the library. Help cover for Mary Ann, our school nurse, on her lunch breaks. Help at recess on the playground, or at lunchtime in the cafeteria. Volunteering may also be done at your home, making phone calls, helping to organize fundraisers, etc. Please contact teachers, the school office, or the Muir forum for additional information.
Muir Community Forum: This is a group of parents involved with Muir volunteering, fundraising, and support. We welcome new members! If you are interested in joining our group please contact us by email at muirparentforum@yahoo.com.
Governance Committee: Governance meets monthly--usually the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 AM in the school cafeteria (call the school office to confirm the date). The Governance group consists of Muir's principal, teachers, classified staff, parents, and student representatives. The main purpose of the Governance is to set school policy, to allocate funds, and to give direction for the school. Parents are always welcome at these meetings.
District Advisory Council: This council has parent representatives who attend the district meetings held seven times annually from November through May.
ELAC: This group of parents and friends of second language learners meets monthly.
GATE: Parents of gifted students may support special opportunities for their children. The GATE Parent meetings are held twice a year in November and April.
Other Resources for parents:
Home Bulletins are sent home once or twice monthly. These bulletins announce current school news and events and help to keep parents informed. Bulletins are mailed to parents of secondary students, and sent home with children in elementary grades.
Parent conferences are held throughout the school year to inform the parents of student assessment results and report cards. Parents are encouraged to call the school to set up an appointment to review their child's progress with the teacher.
Partnerships: We are always seeking new partners in education. Our partners are community members who support Muir in many ways (please see our partnership page). If you know of any businesses or groups who might be interested in being partners with Muir, please direct them to our head counselor.
